Club Information
Members of Stonehaven Canoe Club are actively involved
in river and sea kayaking and open canoeing. We run pool sessions for members from the middle of
January until the end of April.
From the end of April to mid September we normally
train from Stonehaven harbour.
The club meets at Stonehaven Canoe Club boat shed, along Shorehead.
Sea kayaking - the NE Scottish coastline, particularly near Stonehaven is an excellent
place to sea kayak.
Over the summer (From May to September) we run Monday
night sea trips from Stonehaven. It is advisable to arrive prompt at 6pm in
order to get fitted out with a boat etc
River kayaking - usually takes place predominantly on the rivers throughout NE Scotland,
and occasionally further afield.
Surf kayakers - can take advantage of the sandy beaches and good surf waves at Stonehaven
beach and other sandy beaches of NE Scotland.
Stonehaven Canoe Club annual membership fees are shown
on the Membership Page.
These fees help towards the cost of new equipment, repairs, the shed rental,
and insurances etc. and affiliation to the Scottish Canoe Association (SCA).
Members are encouraged to become an individual/family member with the SCA and
benefit from all their perks.
Taster sessions for prospective new members may be offered
periodically. For new members, training sessions will be run in foundation
paddling and rescue skills. These sessions will be run in a block possibly over
a couple of evenings and a weekend.
It is now our policy that each member gain the generic
Stonehaven Canoe Club 2 Star award prior to participating in any trips.
Obviously some people may already have the skills but will still have to be
assessed unless they already hold the BCU 2 star award or higher.
Members who have gained their SCC 2 Star skills will be given the opportunity
to go on evening trips up and down the coast, provided the conditions are suitable, and also day and weekend trips. Day and weekend
trips are organised by committee members, trip
leaders and coaches. Each trip is graded according to abilities.
All members are kept informed of trips via e-mail.
We have meetings about every two months – all club members
are welcome.
We are a friendly group of people who support and encourage members to progress.
Children are welcome to join although it is our policy
that during training sessions they be accompanied by an adult. The adult does
not have to participate but must be in close proximity at all times. Children
will only be allowed on trips where the conditions and coaching cover is deemed
appropriate by the lead coach.
